The Dachshund Back Guide

What every dachshund owner should know about protecting a very long spine. This starter guide offers general education, not a diagnosis or a substitute for veterinary care.

Know the risk without living in fear

Dachshunds are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease, often called IVDD. Problems with spinal discs can cause pain and, in some cases, neurological changes. Daily habits cannot eliminate that risk, but maintaining an appropriate weight and following an individualized exercise plan are sensible foundations.

Make the everyday easier

Use stable, non-slip routes around the house. Teach your dog to use a secure ramp for furniture if your veterinarian recommends it. When lifting, support both the chest and rear so the body stays level. Ask your vet about appropriate activity, especially after any previous back injury.

Signs that need prompt help

A hunched posture, reluctance to move, yelping, wobbliness or weakness can signal a problem. Sudden loss of movement or bladder control warrants urgent veterinary assessment. Limit movement while arranging care; do not test the back, give human painkillers or try home manipulation.
