Do Dachshunds Really Need Ramps?

A ramp can turn a dramatic leap off the sofa into an ordinary walk. For a long-bodied dog, that is a sensible change to the daily routine. But no ramp can guarantee protection from back disease.
Choose for the dog, not the décor
Look for a stable ramp with a grippy surface and a gentle slope. Secure it so it cannot slide, and make sure the landing is easy to reach. Introduce it at floor level with treats and short practice sessions rather than pushing your dog up it.
Build a safer routine
A ramp only helps if your dachshund uses it. Supervise access to furniture while training, and ask your veterinarian what activity is appropriate for your dog. Dogs with pain, weakness or a history of back problems need an individual plan, not a one-size-fits-all shopping recommendation.
